Light Beacons Welcome You to Ludington

Michigan is home to 129 lighthouses, and if you enjoy scoping out these iconic beacons, you cannot miss a stop in Ludington. Two lights are located right here, and we have everything you need to know about what to see and how to get there.

Welcoming you to this freshwater coastal town is the North Breakwater Light, located at the entrance to the Ludington harbor. A favorite summertime activity among locals and visitors is to walk the pier for a chance to tour this 1924 beacon, which boasts a vibrant green hue from its tower at Stearns Park.

The Big Sable Lighthouse is located north of Ludington and accessed through the Ludington State Park. The 1867 lighthouse grounds are managed by the Sable Point Lighthouse Keepers Association, and volunteer keepers for both lighthouses have the opportunity to work and stay inside the Big Sable for the seven-month season.

Visitors are welcome to explore the grounds, tour the original keeper’s quarters, which have been converted into a gift shop, stroll along the sand dunes or climb the tower. Guests may hike 1.8 miles to the light or take advantage of one of the many Bus Days. Live afternoon concerts and tour guides entertain visitors who make the trip.

If you’re a lighthouse fan, stop by the SPLKA office, where you can get your lighthouse passport stamped, purchase an all-access pass for four area lighthouses and pick up a variety of memorabilia.
