The Manistee National Forest encompasses 481,000 acres of woods, streams and lakes along the Lake Michigan shoreline and offers year-round recreation for many outdoor activities including hunting, fishing, off-road vehicle use, biking, driving for pleasure, camping, hiking, canoeing, snowmobiling, river use, and gathering–berry picking, mushrooming. Manistee is the name of a Chippewa Indian God and means Spirit of the Woods”.
