Top 5 Ways to Enjoy the Big Lake

Lake Michigan’s unsalted waters beckon visitors to Ludington every summer. It’s one of the appeals of this small, coastal town. But why not try something new this year?

Wander past the swim buoys and get your feet wet with one of our Top 5 Ways to Enjoy the Big Lake:

1. Charter a fishing excursion

Ludington hosts one of the largest salmon fishing tournaments on the Great Lakes every July — but if competition isn’t your thing — try a relaxing charter to reel in one of these prized fish off the coast. This is a great family activity, and there’s nothing better than taking in the sunrise from a boat on Lake Michigan.

2. Paddle

If you are a kayaker, you won’t want to miss the Sable Points Water Trail: 35 miles of shoreline paddling from Ludington to Silver Lake State Park in Oceana  County. You will enjoy peaceful, sand-dune scenery and be able to navigate and explore six adjacent rivers and streams. SUP boarding has also become popular, which allows you to enjoy the lake from a new perspective by standing on it. To rent a kayak or SUP board, visit one of Pure Ludington’s outfitters.

3.  Cross Lake Michigan on the S.S. Badger

Take a step back in history and sail aboard this National Historic Landmark. The four-hour journey takes you across Lake Michigan to Manitowoc, WI. Aboard the ship, there are many activities for your family to enjoy: craft beer, movies, Badger Bingo or simply chilling out on the ship’s bow. For an exciting twist, check out the Badger’s shoreline cruises. Dress up in tropical or pirate costumes for themed excursions.

4. A Day at the Beach

Ludington is known for its sugar-sand beaches and historic, landmark lighthouses. Spend a day outdoors, swimming the big lake, playing frisbee, engaging in a game of volleyball or just plain relaxing in the sun. Walk the pier or Ludington State Park trails to visit and tour the light beacons in town. Stearns Park Beach also has a skate park, mini golf, handicapped accessible walkways and concessions at the water’s edge.

Enjoy a relaxing evening cruise aboard the Princess from Harbor Tours, LLC. Come alone, bring your best mates, or rally the whole crew and experience the lakeshore from a whole new angle. This is a perfect activity for families, a group of friends or a private tour for two. Don’t forget your camera to capture these spectacular sites!
